Free Events

Major cities such as New York, London and Toronto can be pricey destinations to visit, but there are also plenty of free events for the traveler on a budget.

From mainstream to art house, free film screenings are offered all year round in the British capital. Roxy Bar and Screen often features free film-based events. There are also free Birdwatching Walks on Hampstead Heath, Spring Flowers Walk in Greenwich Park, and the Victoria Regina Walk Tour that gives visitors a glimpse of where the former queen was born.

Up north, Toronto takes pride in its winter festivals. Held together with the famous Winterlicious food festival is the Toronto Wintercity Festival – two weeks of free events that include street theater, comedy, concerts and family activities. You can also take advantage of free outdoor screenings at Yonge-Dundas Square during the Toronto International Film Festival, or attend two of Toronto’s biggest events, Pride Week and Caribana, where there are lots of free attractions.

Los Angeles is home to Hollywood. Despite its glitz and glamour, Hollywood is an attractive travel destination even for the backpacker. Navigate through the Hollywood Walk of Fame or visit the Forecourt of the Stars at Graumans’s Chinese Theatre where you can see the footprints and handprints of Hollywood legends. One of the most popular free events in Los Angeles is celebrity viewing: watch your favorite TV personalities during TV show tapings where tickets are usually free.
